Plan ahead & prepare +> Inform yourself on the daily products and services you use in order to make appropriate substitutions or reductions. Planning lessens convenience purchases!

Walk & camp on durable surfaces +> Walk more! Exploring your community can expose you to new places, reduce stress, and eliminate some transportation emmisions.

Dispose of waste properly +> On top of never littering, try to pick up dropped trash during everyday activites. Backpackers will pack out their own waste, so it's a little less scary thinking about carrying someone else's used wrapper in your pocket.

Take only pictures +> Share information about your favorite sustainable products, services, and tips with the people you care about. Having a community behind you while making difficult habit changes can be a world of difference!

Minimize campfire impacts +> Don't create more fire than you need. When you hear "reduce, reuse, repair, and recycle," remember that reducing the quantity of consumed products and services to a minimum is a gold star effort!

Respect wildlife +> Encourage safer driving for the safety of urban animals, plant native plants to improve ecological conditions, and advocate for displaced and endangered species when possible.

Engage with and be kind to other hikers +> Most importantly, shaming others into sustainable practices never works. Understand that progress takes time and people will make mistakes. Be unconditionally supportive, kind, and passionate in all efforts.

My personal use has been limited to the scanning of cosmetic products, but the food-scanning utility seems just as developed. Once a barcode has been scanned, a page including user-submitted information from ingredient labels is listed with an assosciated score of health risk by ingredient and overall. All ingredients contain a information page detailing specific regulations and effects.

Determining what sustainability means on a personal level can be an environmentalist's biggest lifetime goal. On an Earth with over 8 billion other people, how can we make sure that our personal efforts towards a better future for communities across the globe are worthwhile and not for naught? A Malthusian outlook can corner all hopeful efforts into discouragement, and though we must continue for larger bodies (corporations, governments, etc.) to pull their weight, we must not neglect the power of a single person to influence others to treat our Earth just a little better each day.

Computer vision is a heirarchical (meaning, it can break things down into parts of parts) machine learning algorithm that can identify and extrapolate data from images. Images are how we communicate a lot of data about the state of Earth's ecosystems, so there are plenty of examples on how the subfield could help us in the field of sustainable development.

Here are some examples of the most groundbreaking computer vision and sustainability efforts:

Using satellite imagery to monitor changes and assess the health of forest cover, including pest and disease outbreaks.

Identification of species on trail cam footage to count animal populations and understand long-term trends.

Implement in 'Digital Serious Games' where games powered by computer vision promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills related to addressing and mitigating environmental challenges. These player will make better-informed decisions on how to address climate change.

Meal Prepping: it doesn't have to be intimidating. AND it can be an amazing personal step towards sustainable living.

Take a few minutes each week to jot down when and what, generally, you're going to eat over the 7 days. 'What' doesn't have to be spot on or concrete, maybe it's just whether you're cooking, eating out, or having leftovers. Motivate yourself by keeping personal goals in mind, like eating healthier, spending less money, building a routine, or trying new recipes.

Take another step by planning out what recipes or items you'll use with each meal, if applicable. Planning these out ahead of time makes grocery shopping easier and also reduces the amount of uneaten or expired food that ends up in landfill.

If you want to prep meals to take to work, school, etc., you could also help the earth. Investing in long-lasting, multipurpose containers can reduce the overall amount of takeout and packaging waste that also clogs landfills.

In 2024, public engineering university Colorado School of Mines will celebrate its 150th year as an institution, and celebrated by a rebranding campaign called '150@Mines.' A subtle, almost unnnoticed change happened to Mines' brand marketing: 'Earth, Energy, Environment' was removed from the school logo, motto, and eventually the mission entirely.

When prompted, most students didn't even realize it was happening, much less permanent. Sustainability organizations brought attention to it during a mid-semester discussion, and the criticisms have started to pile.

Mines prides itself on it's body of well-rounded, ethical engineers, who care dearly about the state of the world and people around them. What happens when we take away the verbal motivation? Are we conceding to pressures from oil & gas, tech, and defense funding?

Nuclear energy has been scrutinized over decades for safety concerns, but people in the renewable energy industry want you to know that nuclear energy:

Both fission and fusion processes create waste that is far lesser in quantity and toxicity than most non-renewable energy in use today.

Nuclear plants take up a fraction of the land that other renewable energy sources (wind, solar, etc.) do while producing the same amount of energy.

While the nuclear fusion (combining particles) industry shows promise, nuclear fission is much more developed and reliable as a large-scale energy production system.

Has far less risk associated with plant operations than non-renewables, despite reputation for disaster. Injuries and death are extremely rare, but often used to overshadow the dangers associated with mining operations.

<media:keywords>fast fashion, thrifting, ethical shopping, second-hand</media:keywords>

First and foremost: the best thing you can do for the environment related to fashion is to buy as little as you can. It's not the materials that harm the Earth necessarily, but the rate at which we buy and discard our clothes. Changing your mindset to resist trendy and short-lived purchases is important, but it doesn't mean you can't love clothes or buy anything new:

If you do decide a new item of clothing is desired or necessary, look towards second-hand first. It may take more work to thrift than to online shop, but the activity can be fun and much less expensive, as well as supportive of a local economy.

Consider repairable items of clothing. Small tears, broken zippers, or slightly large/long pieces of clothing are easily repaired at home or by a tailor. Most people don't know that local tailors specialize in these small adjustments and are affordable!

Embrace clothing exchanges with friends. Breaking stigmas about hand-me-downs or out-of-season clothing can be better for your wallet and your friendships!

If you must buy something new, know what you're buying beforehand. Infrequent purchasing habits allow a buyer to save up for higher-quality, longer-lasting items that may not need to be replaced for up to a lifetime. Use this time to determine exactly what item fits you and your needs.

If shopping online, research sustainable brands and order in as few shipments as possible. Less deliveries means less resources expended delivering a purchase.
