RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Domestic violence calls are unfortunately not uncommon in Washoe County, Nevada, the state, or the country as a whole. However, in the city of Sparks, police officers responding to such calls now have an additional tool to assess the level of danger faced by the victims.
The Questionnaire for Assessing Danger
The Sparks Police Department has introduced a questionnaire consisting of 11 simple questions. While answering these questions is completely voluntary, if the victim answers “yes” to seven or more of them, it triggers a red flag indicating a higher level of danger.
The questions cover various aspects of the abusive relationship, including whether the suspect controls the partner’s daily activities, if there have been threats to kill the partner, and whether the suspect owns a gun.
This questionnaire was developed by a nationally renowned crisis center in Maryland, and guidelines for its use by the Sparks Police Department were created in collaboration with the Human Development and Family Science Department at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).
