Introduction

This report presents an analysis of satellite-detected changes in agricultural areas in a stretch of land 1 km from the Armistice Demarcation Line in the Gaza Strip, Occupied Palestinian Territory. The analysis was conducted by UNOSAT using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery captured between January 2018 and 2024. The aim of the analysis was to identify notable changes in agricultural areas during this time frame, with a focus on the impact of activities such as razing, heavy vehicle activity, bombing, shelling, and other conflict-related dynamics on the health and density of crops.

Methodology

The analysis utilized a Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis as well as a multi-temporal classification to assess changes in agricultural areas. The decline in the health and density of the crops was observed through the analysis, indicating the impact of various activities on the agricultural lands. The analysis included damage assessment for permanent crop fields, arable land, and fallow lands.

Results

The UNOSAT analysis and statistics presented in this report show the extent of the damaged agricultural area in square kilometers, as well as the percentage and percentage change for only the area contained within the zone. The statistical analysis reveals an increase in the percentage of damaged agricultural land from 5.36% in October 2023 to 33.13% in February 2024.
