Happy UN Day!

In October 24th, 1945, the United Nations officially came into being.

Although the many challenges our society has undergone, either on a distant past, our present and affecting our future, there is no other global organization with the legitimacy, convening power and continuous impact in the global trend then the United Nations. Today, the urgency of all countries to came together in the same spirit that in that have guided the first 50 countries in San Francisco, creating the UN Charter, the first draft that became the international organization named as The United Nations.

With a war happening in Ukraine, the remainders of a global pandemic and climate change looming our horizon, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has a message to us:

"Now, more than ever, we need to bring to life the values and principles of the UN Charter in every corner of the world.

By giving peace a chance and ending conflicts that jeopardize lives, futures and global progress.

By working to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, and rescue the Sustainable Development Goals.

By safeguarding our planet, including by breaking our addiction to fossil fuels and kickstarting the renewable energy revolution.

And by finally balancing the scales of opportunity and freedom for women and girls and ensure human rights for all.

As we mark UN Day, let us renew our hope and conviction in what humanity can achieve when we work as one."

The UNA-USA Miami Chapter together with partners, SAVE, Seaworthy Collective, Social Impact Movement, SDGtalks.ai, Voices in Miami, inviting you to take action this week!

Dear UNA Miami Members and Friends!

Today, October 24th 2022, we celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, and here’s how you can be part of it!

Our 3 Day Advocacy activation starts today with the theme “NOURISHING PEACE”, aimed at highlighting how food security and peace are intertwined on a national and international scale.

As part of the UNA Miami community we encourage you to use this theme to emphasize an issue of your choice or select any of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that are important to you or your organization to highlight.

DAY 1 (October 24): CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS

Calling your legislators is a quick and easy way to advocate for the United Nations and our collective humanitarian goals directly. On October 24th advocates across the country will be calling their representatives, and you can too by using the Call-In Day instructions below. Ask to be connected to your two Senators and House representatives on Capitol Hill. If you don’t know who your House representative is, you can look it up here.  *Note: In some cases, you may need to provide your full zip code, including the additional 4 digits.

Steps for Day 1: Call-In Day

  1. Call Capitol Hill at 1-855-466-4862.
  2. Enter your zip code to be connected with your 2 senators and 1 representative.

Day 2 (October 25): SOCIAL MEDIA DAY

That’s why we’re asking you to reach out to your Members of Congress today to urge them to support the UN in nourishing peace worldwide. You can create your own posts, or use one of ours in the link below and just fill in the blanks to send it to your Members of Congress!

  1. Not sure who your Members of Congress are? Type in your ZIP code here to find out. Here is a quick cheat sheet to access their social media handles as well.
