Bold: A Health Tech Startup Targeting Older Adults

By Amanda Rees

In Beverly Hills, California, Amanda Rees witnessed the challenges faced by older adults in terms of falls and balance when she moved in with her grandmother, who was in her 80s. This experience had a profound impact on Rees and led her to shift her focus to healthcare. She founded Bold, a health tech startup that offers digital exercise programs designed for adults aged 65 and older.

Falls among older adults have significant financial implications for the healthcare system, costing approximately $50 billion annually, according to the CDC. Rees aims to address this issue by helping older adults build strength, prevent falls, and reduce hospitalizations through Bold’s services. The Los Angeles-based startup primarily works with Medicare Advantage members and recently secured $17 million in funding during its Series A round.

Rees sat down with STAT to discuss the development of Bold, the concept of “movement is medicine,” and the public health crisis surrounding falls. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
