Carthage Man Ordered to Stand Trial for Sexual Abuse of Underage Girl
A Carthage man has been ordered to stand trial on charges of sexually abusing an underage girl. Angel Mejia Cancinos, 22, waived a preliminary hearing on Thursday in Jasper County Circuit Court. He is facing two counts of first-degree statutory rape of a child less than 14 years old. Associate Judge Joseph Hensley has set his initial appearance in a trial division for October 16.
According to a probable-cause affidavit filed with the charges on Mejia Cancinos, the police received a report on March 26 regarding past sexual abuse of a girl who used to live in Carthage but now resides out of state.
During an interview with the girl, she disclosed that the defendant had engaged in sexual intercourse with her multiple times, starting when she was 12 years old and he was 20 or 21.
The affidavit further states that Mejia Cancinos admitted in a subsequent interview that he had sexual relations with her on four occasions in Carthage. He believed she was 12 or 13 years old at the time.
