Traffic Delays on I-40 East in West Memphis
WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (WMC) – Traffic on I-40 East in West Memphis is finally clear after drivers were stuck traveling at a snail’s pace for about nine hours Sunday.
Eastbound traffic was backed up for miles as ARDOT crews performed emergency maintenance to the roadway just past the I-55 split.
ARDOT officials tell Action News 5 that crews immediately got to work after several large potholes were reported near the Mound City overpass late Sunday morning.
Only the far left lane (of three lanes) was open as crews made repairs. Traffic remained congested for about six miles west of the road work for about nine hours.
ARDOT officials say each pothole was so large that the standard solution, an asphalt patch, was not viable.
ARDOT’s Efforts to Address the Potholes
Throughout Sunday evening, many drivers called the Action News 5 newsroom to report they’d been stuck in the traffic jam for hours.
By 9 p.m., ARDOT crews completed their work, and the lanes reopened.
