The Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter participated in the Ohio FFA State Urban and Agricultural Soils Career Development Events on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Event Details

The state contest took place at a farm located north of Plain City. Participants were required to evaluate four soil sites and complete a written test and soil survey test.

Agricultural Soils Event

The agricultural soils event focused on evaluating land for farming purposes, considering risk factors such as soil erosion, soil compaction, water quality, and soil health limitations. In addition, participants were expected to provide suggestions on implementing best management practices.

Team Performance

The Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter team placed 33rd out of 50 teams. The team members included Wyatt Black, Gunner Palivec, Cooper Palivec, and Kinsley Courtright. Among the individual participants from Miami East, Wyatt Black achieved the highest placement, ranking 72nd out of 181 participants.

• Indicator 3.9.1: Mortality rate attributed to household and ambient air pollution.
• Indicator 3.9.2: Mortality rate attributed to unsafe water, unsafe sanitation, and lack of hygiene (exposure to unsafe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for All (WASH) services).
• Indicator 3.9.3: Mortality rate attributed to unintentional poisoning.

4. Sustainable Development Goal: Quality Education

• Target 4.7: By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.
• Indicator 4.7.1: Extent to which (i) global citizenship education and (ii) education for sustainable development, including gender equality and human rights, are mainstreamed at all levels in (a) national education policies, (b) curricula, (c) teacher education, and (d) student assessment.

5. Sustainable Development Goal: Gender Equality

• Target 5.a: Undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance, and natural resources, in accordance with national laws.
• Indicator 5.a.1: (a) Proportion of total agricultural population with ownership or secure rights over agricultural land, measured by sex; and (b) share of women among owners or rights-bearers of agricultural land, measured by sex.

6. Sustainable Development Goal: Clean Water and Sanitation

• Target 6.3: By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater, and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.
• Indicator 6.3.2: Proportion of bodies of water with good ambient water quality.

7. Sustainable Development Goal: Affordable and Clean Energy

• Target 7.2: By 2030, increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
• Indicator 7.2.1: Renewable energy share in the total final energy consumption.

8. Sustainable Development Goal: Decent Work and Economic Growth

• Target 8.6: By 2020, substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training.
• Indicator 8.6.1: Proportion of youth (aged 15-24 years) not in education, employment, or training.

9. Sustainable Development Goal: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

• Target 9.4: By 2030, upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes, with all countries taking action in accordance with their respective capabilities.
• Indicator 9.4.1: CO2 emission per unit of value added.

10. Sustainable Development Goal: Reduced Inequalities

• Target 10.2: By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic, and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or economic or other status.
• Indicator 10.2.1: Proportion of people living below 50 percent of median income, by age, sex, and persons with disabilities.

11. Sustainable Development Goal: Sustainable Cities and Communities

• Target 11.3: By 2030, enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated, and sustainable human settlement planning and management in all countries.
• Indicator 11.3.1: Ratio of land consumption rate to population growth rate.

12. Sustainable Development Goal: Responsible Consumption and Production

• Target 12.4: By 2020, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water, and soil to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.
• Indicator 12.4.1: Number of parties to international multilateral environmental agreements on hazardous waste, and other chemicals that meet their commitments and obligations in transmitting information as required by each relevant agreement.

13. Sustainable Development Goal: Climate Action

• Target 13.3: Improve education, awareness-raising, and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning.
• Indicator 13.3.1: Number of countries that have integrated mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning into primary, secondary, and tertiary curricula.

15. Sustainable Development Goal: Life on Land
