Marcelle Haddix has been selected as the next dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. With her extensive experience in leadership positions at Syracuse University, Haddix brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new role. Currently serving as associate provost for strategic initiatives and former chair of the Department of Reading and Language Arts at Syracuse, Haddix is well-equipped to lead with excellence.

The appointment of Haddix marks a homecoming for her, as she was born in Madison and grew up in Milwaukee. She is excited to be connected to the work being done in her hometown and to contribute to the School of Education’s tradition of excellence and innovation.

Haddix’s academic background includes a doctorate in education from Boston College, a master’s degree in adult education from Cardinal Stritch University, and a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Drake University. Her expertise lies in literacy and teacher education, with a specific focus on the experiences of students and teachers of color.

One of Haddix’s key visions for education is a holistic approach that integrates education, arts, and health. She believes in the power of collaboration and interconnectedness within these areas to address pressing issues in education. The School of Education’s emphasis on these areas aligns with her vision.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Haddix is passionate about the arts, theater, dance, yoga, and reproductive health. She has co-founded a wellness cooperative in Syracuse and has been involved in various literacy programs and initiatives.

As the dean of the School of Education, Haddix will serve as the chief academic and executive officer. Her responsibilities will include staffing, budgeting, curriculum development, student academic affairs, physical space management, fundraising, and alumni relations.
