Patiala: Man and Five Others Booked for Forcing Daughter into Marriage at 16

9 years after her marriage at 16, woman gets dad, hubby arrested

Patiala police have booked a man and five others for allegedly forcing his daughter to marry in 2015 when she was aged 16.

Background

The daughter, who is now 25 years old, filed a complaint stating that she was also forced to give birth a year after the marriage. Initially, the police did not take any action on her complaint, and she had to fight a year-long legal battle to get an FIR registered against the accused, including her father, cousin brother, husband, and in-laws.

Reasons for Forced Marriage

The woman claimed that her mother opposed the marriage as she wanted her to continue with her studies. However, her cousin brother and uncle convinced her father to marry her off because they wanted to take over her father’s five acres of agricultural land. Traditionally, daughters do not inherit land after marriage. The woman also faced domestic violence and was eventually thrown out of her in-laws’ house after four months of marriage.

Legal Proceedings

After being rejected by her own father and losing a dowry case against her in-laws in the lower court, the woman started living with her uncle and raising her son. Last year, she finally filed a complaint against her father, relatives, in-laws, and husband for forcing her into the marriage. She approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, and after a year-long legal battle, the case was registered on Tuesday.

Police Action

Nabha Sadar police station SHO Gurvinder Singh Sandhu confirmed that a case has been registered, and the complainant’s father, husband, and cousin brother have been arrested. The police are currently searching for the remaining accused.
