The Ohio Department of Agriculture Adds 139 Acres to Farmland Preservation Program

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) has recently expanded its Farmland Preservation Program by adding 139 acres of agricultural land. This initiative aims to preserve the state’s agricultural landscape, which is crucial for sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Preserving Agricultural Land

The first two commitments of 2024 under the Farmland Preservation Program include the Swingle Family in Medina County with 47 acres and the Boeck Family in Greene County with 92 acres. These families have voluntarily entered into agricultural easement agreements with the ODA, committing to maintaining their land predominantly for agricultural use.

Through these agreements, the landowners may receive compensation or tax deductions. The ODA works in partnership with local sponsors, such as the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and Tecumseh Land Trust, to secure these agreements and ensure the long-term preservation of agricultural land.

Impact and Benefits

Since the establishment of the Office of Farmland Preservation in 1998, a total of 711 farms covering 105,997 acres have entered into these agreements. The funds generated from the purchase of easements are reinvested in the local economy by the landowners. They use these funds to expand their farming operations, purchase new equipment, reduce debt, implement conservation practices, plan for retirement, support their children’s education, and fulfill other purposes.
