Former Delaware Daycare Operator Faces Multiple Charges Related to Child Abuse

DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) – A Delaware County woman facing 17 felony charges related to the abuse of children appeared in court on Monday morning.

Charges and Indictment

  1. 14 counts of endangering children, a third-degree felony
  2. 3 counts of kidnapping, a first-degree felony

Rhonda Coomes, of Randor, allegedly tortured, abused, restrained, and physically harmed children in her care between January 2021 and September 2023. During this period, she owned and operated her own daycare center in Delaware County.

Bond and Legal Proceedings

In February, Coomes was issued a $500,000 bond for one kidnapping charge. On Monday, a Delaware County Court of Common Pleas judge ordered the bond to remain the same for all charges. A pretrial date has been set for May 28, with a trial date scheduled for June 14. Coomes’ attorney stated that they are likely to request a continuance.

Specific Incidents of Abuse

  • In September, Coomes allegedly injured a 10-month-old girl by hitting her multiple times in the face with her hand and a “hard plastic diaper wipe container.” The child suffered a black eye.
  • On the same day, Coomes allegedly abused a 3-year-old for not eating fast enough. She is now accused of abusing six additional children.

Arrest and Additional Charges

Coomes was arrested on January 26 and initially charged with one count of kidnapping. However, the sheriff’s office stated that this charge was a “placeholder” and that Coomes would likely face additional felony charges related to her physical abuse of multiple children in her daycare.
