Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach Center Seeks Donations to Support Teen Parents in Brazos County

The Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach Center is appealing to the community for financial contributions this holiday season to sustain their programs for teenage parents in Brazos County.

Background

According to the Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach Center, a baby is born to a teenage mother in Brazos County every two days. Although the teen pregnancy rate in Brazos County is lower than the national average, the lack of support for young mothers still leads to negative consequences.

  • 20% of these births are repeat births.
  • Children born to young single moms under 18 have twice the incidents of child abuse and neglect compared to children born to older mothers.

Programs for Teen Parents

For the past 25 years, the Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach Center has been assisting young mothers in navigating through teen pregnancy. Currently, their teen parent programs serve approximately 200 teen moms, dads, and their children.

One of the group sessions they offer is called the “Mama Club” for teen moms, and “Real Men” for teen dads. These programs take place every Tuesday night and provide a full meal, fun activities, and parenting discussions where participants learn new parenting skills and ways to cope with the challenges of being a young parent.

Sustainable Development Goals

The work of the Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach Center aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  1. SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – By providing support and resources to teen parents, the center contributes to the well-being of both the parents and their children.
  2. SDG 4: Quality Education – The center aims to surround young women with mentors and caring adults, which has been shown to improve academic success.
  3. SDG 5: Gender Equality – By addressing the specific needs of teenage mothers and fathers, the center promotes gender equality and empowers young parents to have a successful life.
  4. SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – The center focuses on reducing inequalities by providing equal access to support and resources for teen parents in Brazos County.
