Substitute Teacher Training in Central Union High School District

The Central Union High School District recently organized a day of training for approximately a hundred new and returning substitute teachers. The training took place at the facilities of the Imperial County Office of Education, and it included mandated training sessions, classroom management discussions, and access to various resources led by instructional coaches.

The district’s Public Information Officer, Fernanda Lynch, explained that in previous years, separate orientations were held for returning and new substitute teachers. However, this year, both groups were combined, resulting in a larger-than-normal gathering.

Despite the larger group size, the district was able to provide training for close to 100 participants, including both new and returning substitute teachers. Carol Moreno, the Central Union High School District’s Executive Director of Human Resources, expressed satisfaction with the training, stating, “Those in attendance really appreciated this new component. Overall, the training was well-received, and we feel that our substitute teachers are better prepared to provide valuable instruction and support in the absence of the regular teacher.”

Training Topics

During the training sessions, the district covered a range of mandated topics, including child abuse mandated reporter, drug and alcohol-free workplace, bloodborne pathogens, safety, classroom management, Google Classroom, teaching strategies, respect in the workplace, and other related subjects. The training lasted for approximately six hours, divided into two sessions of three hours each.

The participants were divided into two groups, with one session led by the district’s Instructional Support Team and the other by the Human Resources department. This year marked the first time that additional training was offered by the Instructional Support Team.

Sustainable Development Goals

  1. Quality Education
  2. Reduced Inequalities
  3. Decent Work and Economic Growth

The Central Union High School District’s substitute teacher training aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By providing comprehensive training to substitute teachers, the district contributes to Goal 4: Quality Education. The training equips substitute teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure that students receive valuable instruction and support even in the absence of their regular teacher.

Furthermore, by combining the orientations for new and returning substitute teachers, the district promotes Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities. This approach ensures that all substitute teachers, regardless of their experience, receive the same level of training and support.

Lastly, the training contributes to Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. By investing in the professional development of substitute teachers, the district enhances the quality of education and creates opportunities for individuals seeking employment in the education sector.
