The circular economy is hardly a new phenomenon. In fact, it’s been applied for thousands of years, ever since the Sumerian people repaired broken wheels rather than throwing them away.
What’s changed is that during the substantial shift towards consumerism over the second half of the 20th century. In recent years, if a smartphone suddenly had a minor fault, most users would simply buy a new one and let their old model collect dust on a forgotten shelf. But this sentiment is now changing.
“Our practical experience in the industry has revealed an increasing willingness among consumers to recycle and reuse valuable items they possess. This extends beyond second-hand electronics to encompass luxury bags, wrist watches, prestigious liquors, and gold,” Kerry explains.
Nevertheless, many consumers were deterred from going second-hand due to the perceived unreliability of refurbished electronics. And that’s precisely where specialized companies like ATRenew come in. Today, these firms leverage sophisticated technologies and excellent supply chains to enhance refurbishment processes across the board while safeguarding data security and personal privacy.
Talking about these advancements, Kerry says that “within the realm of second-hand electronic device processing, we continuously reinforce our automated quality inspection capabilities to achieve high-precision assessments while replacing manual operations with picking robots through extensive utilization of automated technologies for quality inspection, warehousing, and pricing purposes. Additionally, our operation center also conducts thorough privacy cleaning using our proprietary pre-owned product data cleaning system called AiQingChu. This system ensures multiple rounds of data erasure and overwriting to prevent any malicious recovery of user data and effectively avoids any potential privacy breaches or other data security issues.”
Consequently, ATRenew “aspires to resolve challenges related to poor service experiences, inconsistent quality inspection standards, fragmented recycling across multiple categories, and leakage of personal information,” Kerry concludes.
ATRenew’s Commitment to Sustainability
To meet the high standards of modern consumers, ATRenew has been significantly expanding its production facilities over the past few years. Its Dongguan Automation Operation Center opened in 2022 and is now equipped with Matrix 3.0, a new-generation automated quality inspection system for pre-owned electronics.
“Matrix 3.0 re-upgrades and combines triple capabilities of automated quality inspection, precise positioning, and robot assistance to form an intelligent equipment integration system with digital collaboration and management capabilities, realizing the full-process automated quality inspection of various functions, as well as a multi-angle product photo shoot,” Kerry enthusiastically explains.

While the circular economy is, by definition, already part of the growing sustainability industry, ATRenew also shows that it values sustainability beyond its business model. After all, there are a number of environmental implications that come with electronics, ranging from e-waste to hazardous materials, leaks, soil erosion, and more.
