DALLAS, PA, July 23, 2024 – Recent graduates of Misericordia University’s (MU) teacher education department (TED) earned a 100% first-time pass rate on their professional licensure exams for the 2023-2024 academic year, notably exceeding state averages. The areas of excellence for the latest group of MU undergraduate test takers includes early childhood education, special education, middle level education, secondary English, and secondary history (citizenship). Graduate students in the reading specialist and speech-language pathology programs also achieved 100% first-time pass rates.

Preparation for Teaching Excellence

Colleen Duffy, Ed.D., chair of teacher education and director of graduate teacher education programs at MU said, “Our students are very well prepared, hard-working, and motivated. They are going to be excellent teachers. The faculty in teacher education and across campus in various disciplines are also highly focused on each student’s professional competence, ability to collaborate, and contemporary skills and knowledge. I applaud our students for their remarkable success in passing the test on their first opportunity to take it.”

Addressing the Teacher Shortage

Passing the certification exam after only one attempt accelerates the process of placing teachers in classrooms and school districts to alleviate the teacher shortage.

Commitment to Effective Teaching

Misericordia’s teacher education department makes available a broad array of academic offerings on both the undergraduate and graduate levels for current teachers as well as those who want to become teachers. With all of its programs, TED seeks to develop effective teachers who are masters of the content they teach and who teach in pedagogically-sound ways that inspire students to learn. Using educational theory and methods courses with the liberal arts core as a base, the teacher education department provides a variety of learning opportunities to facilitate Misericordia University students’ mastery of a thorough knowledge of human growth and development with an appreciation of diversity so that, as teachers, MU graduates will understand, respect and respond to the unique strengths, needs, and desires presented by individual students and their families.

Misericordia University’s Milestone

Misericordia University is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2024 and is planning to welcome its second largest first-year class this August. TED is one of the University’s oldest departments, preparing thousands of teachers for our nation’s classrooms.
