Sustainable Development Goals and the Affordable Connectivity Program in Alabama
BESSEMER, Ala. – Program Supporting Alabama Families’ Access to Affordable Internet Set to Expire
A program aimed at helping one in five Alabama families access affordable internet is scheduled to expire at the end of April. To address this issue, Rep. Terri Sewell hosted a roundtable discussion in Brighton where customers shared their experiences and the benefits they have gained from the Affordable Connectivity Program.
Customer Testimonials Highlighting the Importance of the Affordable Connectivity Program
- One woman shared her story of taking care of her teenage granddaughter, who relies on the internet not only for completing school work online but also for closed captioning during church due to her hearing aids.
- Another customer expressed how the program has been beneficial for her as she teaches her children at home and relies on the internet for their daily lessons.
These customers emphasized that if the Affordable Connectivity Program expires, they would be forced to re-budget their expenses.
Current Benefits of the Affordable Connectivity Program
- The program currently provides eligible families with up to $30 each month for internet service.
- Families can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, computer, or tablet.
- For households on qualifying Tribal lands, the program offers up to $75 per month.
In order to ensure the continuity of this program, Rep. Terri Sewell is cosponsoring the Affordable Connectivity Extension Act. This act aims to expand the Affordable Connectivity Program by providing $7 billion in funding. The goal is to lower the internet bills for Alabama families in Birmingham and Brighton, as well as other areas in the state.
