Iran’s Minister of Agriculture Focuses on Export-Based Production

TEHRAN – Iran’s Minister of Agriculture said his ministry is concentrating on export-based production in the current Iranian calendar year (started March 20, 2024).

Introduction

In a meeting with senior managers of the ministry, Mohammad Ali Nikbakht, the Minister of Agriculture, announced that the ministry is prioritizing export-based production in the current Iranian calendar year. The focus on exports aims to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.

Increased Agricultural Exports

Nikbakht highlighted the success of the previous Iranian calendar year, where more than $1.0 billion worth of agricultural products were exported, showing a 13% increase in weight and a 23% increase in value compared to the previous year. This growth in agricultural exports demonstrates Iran’s commitment to SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Production Jump with the People’s Participation

The current year’s motto, “Production Jump with the People’s Participation,” reflects the ministry’s dedication to involving the public in agricultural production. Nikbakht emphasized that efforts will be made to achieve the objectives of this motto, aligning with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Facilitating Export Activities

Nikbakht called on responsible organizations and companies to provide exporters of agricultural products with the necessary facilities to spur exports and export activities. This aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as collaboration between different stakeholders is crucial for achieving sustainable development.

Investing in Aquaculture and Fisheries

The agriculture minister identified investing in the aquaculture and fisheries sectors as an opportunity for realizing the goals of the production jump. He highlighted the ample capacities of these sectors and their potential to improve the productivity of soil and water resources, contributing to SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 15: Life on Land.

Increase in Agricultural and Foodstuff Exports

The spokesman of the International Relations and Trade Development Committee of Iran’s House of Industry, Mining and Trade, Ruhollah Latifi, reported a 22.5% increase in the value of Iran’s exports of agricultural and foodstuff products in the previous Iranian calendar year. Iranian producers successfully exported approximately $6.3 billion worth of these products, accounting for 12.8% of the country’s total non-oil exports. This growth aligns with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Top Export Destinations

In the previous year, Iraq emerged as the top destination for Iran’s agro-food products, importing $1.986 billion worth of these items. This accounted for 31.5% of Iran’s total exports of food and agricultural products. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) ranked second, importing $751 million, followed by Russia with $521.5 million. These export destinations contribute to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as international trade plays a crucial role in sustainable development.
