Conventional Farming and Biodiversity Loss: A Report on the Impact of EU Conservation Policies

We argue that conventional farming, rather than the conservation policies of the European Union (EU), is the primary driver of biodiversity loss both within and outside the EU (see I. Bateman and A. Balmford Nature 618, 671–674; 2023). We believe that the authors’ suggestion to use land sparing as a means to mitigate the trade-offs between agriculture and biodiversity is overly simplistic.

SDGs, Targets, and Indicators

1. Which SDGs are addressed or connected to the issues highlighted in the article?

  • SDG 15: Life on Land – This goal focuses on protecting, restoring, and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and biodiversity.
  • SDG 2: Zero Hunger – This goal aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

2. What specific targets under those SDGs can be identified based on the article’s content?

  • Target 15.5: Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity, and protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species.
  • Target 2.4: Ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production.

3. Are there any indicators mentioned or implied in the article that can be used to measure progress towards the identified targets?

The article does not explicitly mention any indicators. However, indicators that can be used to measure progress towards the identified targets may include:

  • Indicator for Target 15.5: Percentage change in the extent of natural habitats and biodiversity loss.
  • Indicator for Target 2.4: Adoption rate of sustainable agricultural practices and increase in agricultural productivity.

Table: SDGs, Targets, and Indicators

SDGs Targets Indicators
SDG 15: Life on Land Target 15.5: Take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity, and protect and prevent the extinction of threatened species. Percentage change in the extent of natural habitats and biodiversity loss.
SDG 2: Zero Hunger Target 2.4: Ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production. Adoption rate of sustainable agricultural practices and increase in agricultural productivity.
