‘He’s not going to be beat up by his mother anymore’: Investigator calls case of mom charged with kicking and throwing her 3-year-old son one of worst he’s seen Law & Crime
Police Investigator Commends Witness for Providing Video Evidence of Child Abuse
Introduction
A Florida police investigator has praised a witness for providing video evidence of a mother accused of brutalizing her 3-year-old son. Detective Sgt. Javier Estevez, in an interview with Law&Crime Network’s Jesse Weber, emphasized the significance of the evidence in this case.
Background
Yulia Storozhuk, a 29-year-old woman, is facing child abuse charges in Miami-Dade County after allegedly throwing and kicking her son down a hallway in an apartment building. Detective Estevez, who has been an officer for 22 years, described it as one of the worst cases he has encountered.
Video Evidence
According to an arrest affidavit, the incident was captured on a Ring camera. The footage shows Storozhuk grabbing her son with both hands, lifting him off the ground, and throwing him to the floor. She then maliciously kicks him multiple times before grabbing his face and pushing him down again. Another camera angle shows her pushing the child in the chest, causing him to fall to the floor.
Physical Evidence
When police interacted with the victim, they observed redness on his right cheek and forehead, as well as bruising on his right forearm and left knee. The boy also had scratches on his stomach and back, which he later attributed to Storozhuk scratching him.
Witness Testimony
Law&Crime reviewed the footage, which depicted a woman encountering the child in a hallway. The woman became angry, clenched her fist, and shoved the boy to the floor. The child cried as she continued to mistreat him by throwing him to the floor and forcefully pushing him down the hallway.
Admission of Guilt
Storozhuk admitted post-Miranda that she was the person in the footage. She claimed that she pushed her son as a form of punishment because he insisted on going to the playground and was being difficult and uncooperative.
Investigation and Support
Estevez revealed that Storozhuk had previously contacted the police department, displaying signs of a nervous breakdown and requesting financial assistance for her child. At that time, officers did not find any evidence of abuse. The child is currently under the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Refugee Background
The mother and son lived with a female roommate, all of whom were refugees from the war in Ukraine. Initially skeptical of the roommate’s involvement, officers determined that she was cooperative and the child felt comfortable around her. It is believed that she was unaware of the extent of the abuse, possibly only aware of corporal punishment.
Future of the Child
The child is undergoing testing to assess his well-being. He will be placed in a suitable home, with the involvement of prosecutors and a judge in determining his future. Estevez assured that the child will no longer be subjected to abuse by his mother.
