The Duke of Sussex Plays Polo Match in Support of Disadvantaged Young People Affected by HIV/Aids
The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, participated in a polo match in Singapore on Saturday to raise funds for his charity Sentebale. The money raised will be used to support the organization’s clubs and camps program, which provides intensive psychosocial support to young people living with HIV.
Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
- Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
- Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
The match was played between the Royal Salute Sentebale team, led by Prince Harry, and a Singapore Polo Club team captained by Sentebale’s ambassador and Prince Harry’s long-time friend, Nacho Figueras.
Both Prince Harry and Figueras scored during the match, which ended in a draw with a score of 7-7.
Sentebale, founded by Prince Harry and Lesotho’s Prince Seeiso in 2006, aims to provide support to vulnerable children and young people in southern Africa. The charity’s work aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Prince Harry expressed his gratitude for Sentebale’s work, stating, “Our work has remained rooted in our mission, and in honor of our late mothers, we wish to ensure all children and young people in southern Africa are empowered, healthy, and able to pursue their ambitions and dreams.”
Princess Diana, who was a pioneer in challenging the stigma around HIV/Aids, inspired Prince Harry’s commitment to this cause. She famously held hands and hugged patients with Aids in the 1980s when there was still widespread misinformation about the disease.
Since 2010, the annual polo cup has raised over £11 million to support Sentebale’s work with children and young people affected by poverty, inequality, and HIV/Aids in southern Africa.
Nacho Figueras expressed his ongoing support for Sentebale, saying, “Although Prince Harry and I played on opposing teams this year, we are always united in our support for Sentebale and the life-changing work they do for young people in southern Africa. It’s a highlight every year to come together for this incredible charity, and I’m grateful to everyone who contributes to their work.”
