Authorities in the Dominican Republic to Accuse Wander Franco of Alleged Relationship with Minor
According to a new report, authorities in the Dominican Republic are planning to present formal accusations against Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco. The accusations stem from an alleged relationship with a 14-year-old girl that began in December 2022.
Accusations of Commercial Sexual Exploitation
The report in Dominican newspaper El Nuevo Diario indicates that Franco stands to be accused of commercial sexual exploitation of a minor. This disturbing situation came to light last summer when photos of Franco and the girl circulated on social media. As a result, Franco was placed on administrative leave in August, but was later reinstated at the start of the 2024 baseball season.
The Associated Press previously reported that Franco was going to be accused by prosecutors of sexual and psychological abuse, as well as abduction. However, the accusations of money laundering and sexual exploitation were dismissed in January when Franco was released from prison after failing to respond to a summons by prosecutors.
Judge Denies Request to End Mandatory Check-ins
Last month, a judge in the Dominican Republic denied a request by Franco’s lawyers to end the mandatory check-ins with police on the 30th of every month. The judge also denied a return of Franco’s bail of 2 million Dominican pesos. The judge stated that these measures were necessary to ensure the presence of the accused in the legal process.
MLB Disciplinary Action and Current Status
Prosecutors have until July to present formal accusations against Franco. It is important to note that Franco hasn’t appeared in an MLB game since the alleged relationship with the then-14-year-old girl on August 13. MLB initially placed Franco on the restricted list before moving him to administrative leave. Although he was technically reinstated to the Rays roster after the season, he was put back on administrative leave on March 28.
Despite the legal situation in the Dominican Republic, Franco is still receiving his $2 million salary. However, he could potentially face disciplinary action from MLB once the prosecutors have resolved the case in his home country.
