Why Choosing a Full-Service Energy Partner Can Help Achieve Sustainability Goals – SPONSOR CONTENT FROM ENEL

Introduction

In 2022, the aviation industry generated 800 megatons of carbon emissions, accounting for 2% of all global emissions. To address this issue, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) adopted a long-term global aspirational goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050. This report focuses on Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), the operator and developer of Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino airports, and their efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of their airports and infrastructure.

Challenges in Achieving Sustainable Aviation

The aviation industry faces challenges in reducing emissions, particularly due to the difficulty in replacing jet kerosene as an energy source for aircraft. However, immediate impacts on emissions can be made by focusing on reducing the carbon footprint of airports and infrastructure.

The Role of ADR

ADR has taken a proactive approach in achieving their sustainability goals. They have partnered with Enel X Global Retail, a full-service energy-management organization, to develop a roadmap to net zero emissions by 2030.

Transition to Clean Electrification

Fossil fuels remain the dominant source of energy for industries, including aviation. A shift towards clean electrification is necessary to meet sustainability standards. However, this transition can be complex and costly, impacting competitiveness in the short term.

Benefits of a Full-Service Energy Partner

ADR chose to work with Enel X Global Retail as a single energy partner instead of multiple specialized vendors. This approach ensures collaborative cohesion and reduces the complexity and cost of energy management.

Enel X Global Retail’s Solutions

Enel X Global Retail has provided ADR with custom solutions to meet their energy needs and goals. The centerpiece of their collaboration is the development of a large photovoltaic system at Fiumicino Airport, which will be the largest of its kind in Europe. This system will allow ADR to produce renewable energy on-site, reduce energy costs, and minimize carbon emissions.

Integration of Energy Management Software

Enel X Global Retail is providing ADR with energy-management software to optimize the operations of the photovoltaic system. This software enables predictive maintenance and avoids shutdowns, maximizing the efficiency of the clean-energy systems.

Battery Energy-Storage System

To address the intermittent nature of solar panels, ADR’s photovoltaic system will be integrated with a 10-megawatt-hour battery energy-storage system. This system will store excess photovoltaic energy produced during the day and make it available to meet evening demand, maximizing the use of self-generated green electricity.

Environmental Impact

ADR’s new plant will eliminate 11,000 tons of carbon emissions per year, equivalent to the carbon dioxide absorbed annually by planting 100,000 trees. In addition to the photovoltaic system, ADR plans to electrify its ground vehicle fleet, phase out its fossil fuel-powered cogeneration plant, and invest in low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel made from renewable biomass and waste resources by 2024.

Conclusion

The aviation industry has a long road ahead in achieving sustainability goals. However, by working with a single energy partner like Enel X Global Retail, ADR is taking significant steps towards a cleaner future for aviation.
