Child Labor in Agriculture: A Global Issue
Introduction
- By far the largest employer of children in child labor is agriculture. This is according to a report published jointly by the International Labor Organization and Unicef.
- The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to eradicate child labor and promote decent work for all.
Child Labor in Agriculture
- In 2020, more than 75 percent of all 5-14 year olds in child labor worldwide were employed in the agriculture sector.
- Children aged 15-17 also accounted for a significant share of child labor in agriculture, at 47.6 percent.
- Older teens were more likely to work in services, such as domestic work and commerce, transport, and motor vehicle repair.
- Industry, including construction, mining, and manufacturing, also employed a portion of child laborers.
Regional Patterns
- In Sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture is the biggest sector for childhood employment, with over four out of every five children in child labor working in this sector.
- In Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as Europe and Northern America, the combined shares of services and industry surpass that of agriculture.

June 12 is World Day Against Child Labor, observed by the International Labor Organization.
