Introduction

During its Aug. 24 meeting, the City Council recognized international guests and winners from the Space4Youth Competition. This competition was sponsored by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the Space Generation Advisory Council.

Space4Youth Competition Winners

The Space4Youth winners were selected based on their essays that considered space as a tool to accelerate change in sustainable water resources management, hydrology, and the protection of aquatic ecosystems.

SDGs, Targets, and Indicators

  1. SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

    • Target 6.4: By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.
    • Indicator 6.4.1: Change in water-use efficiency over time.
    • Indicator 6.4.2: Level of water stress: freshwater withdrawal as a proportion of available freshwater resources.
  2. SDG 14: Life Below Water

    • Target 14.1: By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
    • Indicator 14.1.1: Index of coastal eutrophication and floating plastic debris density.

Analysis

The article discusses the recognition of international guests and winners from the Space4Youth Competition, which focuses on space as a tool to accelerate change in sustainable water resources management, hydrology, and the protection of aquatic ecosystems. Based on this information, the following SDGs, targets, and indicators can be identified:

1. SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

The issue of sustainable water resources management and hydrology mentioned in the article aligns with SDG 6, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

The target of increasing water-use efficiency and ensuring sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater directly relates to the focus of the Space4Youth Competition on sustainable water resources management. The indicators mentioned in the article, such as change in water-use efficiency and level of water stress, can be used to measure progress towards achieving this target.

2. SDG 14: Life Below Water

The protection of aquatic ecosystems mentioned in the article aligns with SDG 14, which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

  • Target 14.1: By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
  • Indicator 14.1.1: Index of coastal eutrophication and floating plastic debris density.

The target of preventing and reducing marine pollution, including marine debris, aligns with the focus of the Space4Youth Competition on the protection of aquatic ecosystems. The indicator mentioned in the article, which is the index of coastal eutrophication and floating plastic debris density, can be used to measure progress towards achieving this target.
