Aquatic Invasive Species Roundtable set June 1 in Crosslake Pine and Lakes Echo Journal
The Eighth Annual Aquatic Invasive Species Roundtable
The Whitefish Area Property Owners Association (WAPOA) and the Crow Wing County Lakes and Rivers Alliance (LARA) will be hosting the eighth annual Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Roundtable on Saturday, June 1st. The event will take place at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake, Minnesota. Attendees have the option to participate in-person or virtually. This no-fee event is open to WAPOA members, area lake association members, local government officials, neighbors, students, and all interested individuals.
Agenda
- 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: Coffee and sweets
- 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.: Nick Phelps, assistant professor at the University of Minnesota and director of the Minnesota AIS Research Center (MAISRC), will provide an update on AIS research successes, current plans, and new decision-making initiatives about AIS management.
- 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.: Presentations by MAISRC researchers:
- Daryl Gohl: Establishing a proof-of-concept for using genetic technology for the control of zebra mussels.
- Mikael Elias: Using innovative coatings to prevent the attachment of zebra mussels.
- Amy Schrank: Exploring how increasing the diversity of aquatic plants on a shoreline can benefit lake ecosystems.
Over the past 10 years, MAISRC’s research has played a crucial role in managing AIS populations. Their work has enabled earlier detection of invasive species, improved responses to new infestations, and developed new tools for controlling established populations.
WAPOA and LARA, as partners of MAISRC, are dedicated to advocating for actions that sustain and improve the quality of surface and groundwater in the Whitefish area and throughout Crow Wing County.
