PANAJI: Rani Mukerji Discusses Ageism in the Film Industry

Audiences’ Acceptance Breaks Ageist Barrier, Says Rani Mukerji

Audiences have helped her breach the ageist barrier, said the Hindi film actor Rani Mukerji in a captivating In-Conversation session at the 54th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) on Sunday. Mukerji emphasized the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) throughout her discussion.

Continuing to Work and Defying Age Stereotypes

Mukerji expressed her gratitude towards audiences for their love and acceptance over the years. She stated, “I will work till I am 80. I am not hanging up my boots.” With a career spanning 27 years, Mukerji is determined to challenge age stereotypes and continue her work in the film industry.

Portraying Motherhood at Different Stages of Life

Reflecting on her personal journey, Mukerji highlighted her approach to portraying a mother in her 20s in films such as ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Ta Ra Rum Pum’. She emphasized the importance of accepting one’s age and choosing roles that suit it. Mukerji stated, “I can play a college student’s character today, but it needs a script about a mother going back to college much later in life to justify that part.”

Authenticity and Connection with Characters

Mukerji’s perspective on ageism resonated with the changing landscape of cinema, where authenticity and the ability to connect with characters triumph over superficial considerations. She emphasized that looking like the character is essential in making the audience believe in the character. Mukerji stated, “Fifty per cent of your battle of making people believe in the character is won if you look like the character.”

Maintaining Well-being and Appearance

While Mukerji acknowledged that age has never been excessively important to her, she emphasized the importance of taking care of her well-being. She stated, “My life’s focus is to look like I used to 20 years ago and keep looking like this all my life by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.” Mukerji recognized that audiences not only pay to see her work but also want to see a nice-looking face on screen.
