bp awards Technip Energies with SAF and biodiesel contract

Technip Energies Awarded Contract for Hydrogen Production Unit at Kwinana Biorefinery

Technip Energies, a global leader in energy technology and engineering, has been awarded a significant contract by bp for the construction of a hydrogen production unit at its Kwinana biorefinery in Western Australia. This project is part of bp’s commitment to producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and biodiesel from bio feedstocks, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Engineering, Procurement, and Fabrication of Hydrogen Production Unit

The contract encompasses the engineering, procurement, and fabrication (EPF) of a modularised hydrogen production unit. This unit will have a capacity of 33,000 normal cubic meters per hour and will utilize Technip Energies’ proprietary SMR technology. Hydrogen produced by this unit will be used for the conversion of bio feedstocks into biofuels, including SAF and biodiesel.

Flexibility in Feedstock

The hydrogen production unit will have the capability to produce hydrogen from either natural gas or biogas generated by the Kwinana biorefinery. This flexibility in feedstock selection enhances the sustainability aspect of the project by utilizing both conventional and renewable sources.

Integration with Existing Operations

The unit is planned to integrate with the existing import terminal operations at the Kwinana biorefinery. Additionally, plans for green hydrogen production are currently being assessed, further emphasizing bp’s commitment to sustainable practices and the SDGs.

Kwinana Renewable Fuels Project

The Kwinana Renewable Fuels project is one of five biofuel production projects planned by bp globally. This project aims to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and promote the use of renewable energy sources in the aviation and transportation sectors.

Technip Energies’ Commitment to Success

Loic Chapuis, Senior Vice President of Gas & Low-carbon Energies at Technip Energies, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership: “We are pleased to build on our global leadership in the delivery of hydrogen production units to support bp’s expansion of its biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel businesses. By leveraging our expertise in modularization and proprietary hydrogen technology, we are committed to making this project an industrial success.”
