California sleeping pod business hopes to alleviate affordable housing crisis in the state

A California Company Offers “Sleeping Pods” to Alleviate Housing Crisis

Brownstone Shared Housing, a California company, aims to address the housing crisis in the state by providing “sleeping pods” to people. These private beds, measuring 3.5 feet wide and 4 feet tall, offer comparably affordable living quarters. Rent for these beds ranges between $500 and $900 per month, depending on the building location.

Building Options

The company offers three building options located in Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Bakersfield. Each building holds at least a dozen beds, along with communal bathroom and kitchen arrangements.

Investigation by San Francisco Department of Building Inspection

The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection is currently investigating Brownstone Shared Housing for potential code violations. This includes the lack of proper permits for building the “sleeping pods” and any other additional work on the property.

Statement from Brownstone Shared Housing

In response to the investigation, James Stallworth, co-founder of Brownstone Shared Housing, stated that the reports were “overly sensational.” He clarified that the sleeping pods are simply furniture, similar to IKEA furniture, and do not require any permits for installation. The company is willing to work with the Buildings Department to resolve any concerns.

Previous Code Violations

Inspectors found several code violations at the Palo Alto location in 2022. These violations included the absence of smoke detectors in the sleeping pods, the use of extension cords instead of permanent wiring, over-fusing with multiple-plug strips, exposed wires outside the building, poorly installed wiring, an illegally converted garage, unpermitted remodeled residence, furniture obstructing exit doors and paths, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors needing battery replacements.

California’s Homeless Population

California currently has approximately 30% of the nation’s homeless population. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco is around $2,701 per month.

A Practical Solution to the Housing Crisis

Brownstone Shared Housing sees itself as providing a practical solution to the housing crisis, particularly in places like San Francisco. The company offers comfortable living spaces without the need for costly and time-consuming construction.

Call for Government Support

Stallworth suggests that governments divert a fraction of the funds allocated for affordable housing and homelessness to innovative solutions like their sleeping pods. Brownstone Shared Housing is open to working with the California government to help solve the housing crisis.
