Infrastructure Intelligence: A Sustainable Solution for Water Management

The EchoWater project, originally estimated to cost USD $2.1 billion, has become the largest public works initiative in the city’s history. Comprising of 22 separate construction projects across the region, experts initially predicted that the high price tag would triple rates for residents. Recognizing the need for critical buy-in from residents, program leaders understood that costs had to be reduced.

To address this challenge, EchoWater adopted a data-driven approach, utilizing digital applications to manage costs. They developed an extensive real-time digital twin of the entire project, encompassing over 100,000 construction events, many of which occurred simultaneously.

This innovative workflow enabled project leaders to synchronize design and construction, optimizing workflows across thousands of stakeholders. The digital twin provided valuable insights to anticipate and mitigate potential obstacles and shutdowns, while also offering timely situational awareness of cost and schedule performance.

By operating within this connected digital visual environment, EchoWater successfully completed the project with a budget surplus of USD $400 million. This achievement not only saved ratepayers over half a billion dollars but also resulted in the treatment of 135 million gallons of wastewater daily. The treated water is diverted across the Central Valley, where it is utilized to irrigate one of the world’s most fertile agricultural regions.

Infrastructure Intelligence is Key to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Access to clean drinking water is fundamental to human civilization. To ensure the preservation of this critical resource, sustainable and resilient water management strategies are essential. Infrastructure intelligence, powered by data, plays a pivotal role in understanding and solving today’s water challenges.

Water heroes around the world are utilizing actionable insights derived from data-driven decisions. These insights enable us to harness the value of water today and in the future, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations.
