Birmingham Woman’s Tragic Death Highlights the Importance of Ending Domestic Violence

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – After a Birmingham woman was allegedly kidnapped and later found dead, and her former boyfriend arrested, groups against domestic violence want to make sure you know the signs, and how to help end abuse.

The Role of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The One Place Family Justice Center says it’s not always easy to spot the signs of domestic violence, but talking about it and making sure potential victims know they have resources and support are key to putting a stop to it.

Recognizing the Signs of Domestic Violence

One Place says when it comes to domestic violence, the signs can sometimes be hard to spot.

“Domestic violence thrives in secrecy, and a lot of people who are going through domestic violence don’t want to share because they’re ashamed or worried people won’t believe them,” said Rebecca McWilliams, the Executive Director of One Place Metro AL Family Justice Center.

McWilliams says domestic violence isn’t always physical. It can be sexual, financial, or emotional control over a person.

“Control over what you’re wearing, who you’re seeing, who you’re spending time with, where you’re going, and as they slowly start to exert their power and control over you, that’s when things can get to a more dangerous physical situation,” McWilliams said.

Providing Resources and Support

McWilliams says it’s important for victims to know that there are many resources available.

  • They can be seen by an advocate
  • The YWCA is one of our partners
  • We have the Hispanic Interest Coalition for Spanish-speaking survivors
  • They can come and learn what their options are
  • They can do safety planning
  • They can get help filing a protection order
  • They can get connected to emergency shelter resources
  • They don’t have to do it alone

If you think someone you know is suffering, McWilliams says everyone can play a part in helping end the abuse.

“The most important thing you can do for someone that you believe is going through domestic violence is to let them know that you’re there for them and you believe them and whenever they’re ready to seek help you’re there to support them,” said McWilliams.
