A Leap of Faith for a Sustainable Future
In pursuit of better education opportunities for my family and a place where we could truly belong, I made the decision to move from Missouri to Rochester two years ago. Having lived a nomadic lifestyle due to my father’s military service and my previous career in mining spanning 15 years across five continents, I developed a deep understanding of the complexities and environmental impacts associated with metal extraction. Recognizing the need for change, I decided to realign my professional pursuits towards sustainability.
Transitioning Towards Next-Generation Technologies
My interest in sustainability led me to transition from mining to recycling in 2008. Through my work in recycling, I realized the importance of being part of next-generation technologies and processes that contribute to a better future. Upon arriving in Rochester, I saw parallels between my personal journey and the city’s potential to become a new type of industrial leader by embracing clean energy and next-generation technologies.
Li-Cycle: Pioneering Recycling Innovation
My company, Li-Cycle, is dedicated to recycling lithium-ion batteries using innovative technologies. Since establishing our first U.S.-based facility in Rochester in 2020, we have received a warm welcome from the community. Our Hub facility, partly financed by a $375 million loan commitment from the Department of Energy, is set to become the largest source of recycled lithium in North America. This achievement positions Rochester as a center for innovation and clean tech, contributing to the revolution towards electrification and the development of more sustainable and diverse energy systems in the U.S.
Creating Green Collar Jobs and Driving Economic Growth
The development of our facility will require the involvement of 1000 people during construction and will eventually provide 270 full-time employment opportunities. This presents a unique chance for industrial operators, industrial electricians, mechanical maintenance technicians, and instrumentation technicians, who were once rooted in the old industry, to be part of the clean energy future and contribute to the transition towards a greener economy.

Rochester has the potential to become a thriving hub for clean technology, innovation, and advancement. However, achieving this vision requires continuous support from the local community and the positive influence of forward-thinking companies like Li-Cycle.
