Child Care Funding in South Dakota
MADISON, S.D. (KELO) — Millions of dollars are headed to organizations and child care providers in South Dakota.
The more than $3.7 million in grant funding is a part of the governor’s child care investment plan.

Like many towns, Madison is short on child care.
Executive director of the Lake Area Improvement Corporation Brooke Rollag says a market analysis a few years ago revealed the need for at least 300 additional slots in Madison.
“It’s a child care crisis. We are truly in a child care desert,” Rollag said.
Child Care Center Construction
Lake Area Improvement Corporation is planning on building a child care center at the site of this tee ball diamond near the aquatic center. It will be operated by EmBe.
The organization has been awarded $400,000 in the latest round of the child care-related grant funding.
“What it will do for us specifically is it will just bring us one step closer to putting a shovel in the ground,” Rollag said.
Impact on Vermillion
Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company president and CEO Jim Peterson says the organization was also awarded $400,000.
The money will help in different ways, including reconfiguring facilities to open up more child care slots and providing certification training for current and future providers.

Peterson: It’s the lifeblood of creating jobs. So from jobs, retention and creation, you need housing, you need child care, and the workforce.
Both organizations are grateful for the funding.
“There are so many worthy projects. They’re all worthy and I commend all the champions in each and every community for putting their best foot forward and putting that project forward,” Rollag said.
The money is awarded through the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.
Other grant recipients include Elevate Rapid City, the Sioux Falls Development Foundation, the City of Highmore, and McIntosh Community Daycare.
