Law enforcement ask for public’s help in identifying domestic violence offenders

BATON ROUGE, La. – Addressing Domestic Violence in the City

Although police tell us the number of people killed so far this year is down 14% and almost 850 illegal guns have been taken off the streets, domestic violence still plagues our city.

During a press conference on Friday morning, BRPD Deputy Chief Darren Moses revealed that out of the 50 homicides this year, five were confirmed as domestic-related. Among these cases, three were related to domestic family, and two involved domestic intimate partners.

Capital Area Family Justice Center

The briefing took place at the Capital Area Family Justice Center, located on Government Street. The center serves as a refuge for individuals and their children who are facing unstable and potentially life-threatening situations at home. It offers various services, including assistance with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD), East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s office, and onsite therapists.

Susan Hamilton, Executive Director for the Family Justice Center, emphasized that all services provided are free and confidential. The center aims to guide victims of domestic violence through the necessary systems and processes.

Community Involvement

While the available services are crucial, they may not be sufficient to prevent harm to every victim. Therefore, officials are urging community members to be vigilant and help identify problems before they escalate. The Iris Domestic Violence Center in Baton Rouge shared how they can contribute to this effort.

Patty Freeman from Iris highlighted their ability to provide shelter and wraparound services for victims. They also have a crisis line that allows them to take immediate action. Freeman emphasized the importance of offering support and care to children, as it can help steer them towards a better path.
