MIDWEST CITY PROGRAM AIMS TO TACKLE ILLITERACY IN OKLAHOMA

Midwest City, Okla. (KFOR) – Nearly one out of every five Oklahomans over the age of 18 struggle with illiteracy, according to recent data. However, a program in Midwest City is working to address this issue.

Literacy Link Receives Grants to Expand Assistance

Literacy Link, an organization that helps individuals who cannot read or write, has received two grants to expand its services. These grants will enable the organization to hire more tutors and increase its capacity to support more adults in multiple cities on the eastern side of Oklahoma City.

  1. Oklahoma Department of Libraries grant: $9,600
  2. ProLiteracy grant: $3,500

Growing Impact and the Sustainable Development Goals

Literacy Link has experienced significant growth since its inception. In just one year, the organization has increased its number of tutors from four to nine, including the Executive Director. The number of students has also risen from eight to 17. This expansion aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

Addressing the Stigma and Creating a Supportive Environment

Antonia Walker, Executive Director of Literacy Link, acknowledges the discomfort adults may feel when admitting their struggles with literacy. To create a welcoming environment, Walker emphasizes the importance of building trust and rapport with students. The initial sessions focus on getting to know each other, ensuring that students feel supported and ready to embark on their journey towards literacy.

Call for More Tutors

Despite the increasing demand for literacy support, finding tutors remains a challenge. Walker urges individuals interested in becoming tutors to step forward and contribute to this important cause. The time commitment is minimal, with less than an hour and a half required per week.
