MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. – Locksmith to help victims of domestic violence get needed security changes

A Muskegon County man is looking to help survivors of domestic violence by addressing their security needs, both physically and financially. David Trudell, owner of Lakeshore Lock Service, has been working as a locksmith for 37 years. He aims to encourage others to step up and support victims of domestic violence.

Providing Security Changes for Victims

Trudell has changed thousands of locks throughout his career and has no plans of stopping. He has previously worked with the Lansing Police Department, changing locks for domestic violence victims, mostly women. Inspired by a recent phone call he overheard while on a job, Trudell wants to ensure that finances do not prevent victims from feeling safe. He is now offering his locksmith services free of charge to victims of domestic violence in Muskegon County, as well as in Oceana and parts of Ottawa County. Trudell hopes that other locksmiths in different areas, such as Kent County and Grand Rapids, will also offer similar services.

Emphasizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  1. Goal 5: Gender Equality – By providing free locksmith services to domestic violence victims, Trudell is contributing to the goal of achieving gender equality by ensuring the safety and security of women.
  2. Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – Trudell’s initiative aligns with this goal by promoting access to justice and creating a safer environment for victims of domestic violence.

Important Considerations

Before contacting Trudell for assistance, it is essential to check local jurisdiction laws regarding the legal requirements for changing locks. In most cases, a restraining order is necessary. However, if the abuser is on the title of the property, they may have the right to reenter the house.
