We’re supposed to protect kids

Looser child labor laws? | Oct. 9

A bill introduced in our Florida Legislature would modify the decades-old laws protecting children from child labor abuses. The bill would make it possible for children under 16 to work longer hours with fewer limitations on the time and places, most likely to resupply businesses, including the hospitality industry, with fresh sources of labor lost because of the restrictions against workers lacking proper documentation. Such hypocrisy! Tallahassee and a handful of people have limited access to some books in schools in the name of protecting our children from learning about sexual identity challenges and racial issues, as well as our country’s racial and political history that might shock their inquisitive minds. In addition, Florida laws allow unlicensed concealed carry of guns but have done nothing against assault weapons. Rather than protect our children, I think they are abusing them for the profit of businesses and politicians.

Lock them up?

Florida must release its COVID-19 data in settlement with watchdog group | Oct. 10

Once again, taxpayers lose when the truth is revealed. If someone sues the government in a quest for honesty, the guilty government agent or agency pays for all expenses with taxpayer dollars. Why should taxpayers be penalized? The system does not encourage transparency and honesty since the guilty, dishonest parties bear no personal financial responsibility. Maybe we should just lock them up for lying and sabotaging democracy.

Why Ukraine matters

What the Hamas attacks will mean for the Mideast | Column, Oct. 10

To all our local and statewide elected MAGA radicals, don’t cry about your love of Israel and your outrage over Hamas’ sneak attack when at the same time you’re trying to snatch U.S. aid away from Ukraine and leave that embattled nation to Vladimir Putin and his werewolves. As relations improve between Israel and its most powerful Arab neighbors, Ukraine is at least as critically, strategically valuable an ally to us as Israel has been for decades, and perhaps of even more importance in coming years, located as it is at Russia’s throat. Israel was and is key to oil route security broadly. Ukraine is key to European security in all sectors. MAGA needs to be rebuked for its appalling ignorance about Ukraine’s future as well as Europe’s and ours. MAGA politicians are blind to the risk abandoning Ukraine poses to us.
