Sustainable Development Goals and Adult Literacy
ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – The Central Alabama Literacy Council held a Grown-up Spelling Bee to raise money and awareness for adult literacy.
The Grown-Up Spelling Bee is where people from professional backgrounds come together and compete to raise money for a serious cause.
That cause is literacy.
Ron DeThomas, the St. Clair County Coordinator for Central Alabama Literacy Council, says they find and help adults who left high school with a diploma but read on a 2nd to 3rd grade level.
DeThomas says in St. Clair County, about 22% of adults fall into this category. He, along with other volunteers, tutor those looking to earn their GED certification.
“I guess the biggest problem is the fact that all of these people that are in that situation, they’re not people out here with hands raised saying come help me because they don’t want most people to know the fact that they’re 42 years old, 53 years old, 29 years old, whatever. They don’t want people to know they can’t read,” said DeThomas.
This program believes that everyone deserves to know how to read and there’s no shame in asking for help no matter how old you are.
If you would like to volunteer or seek help dealing with literacy, you can contact the Literacy Council.
