Stakeholders Push for Increased Adoption of Renewable Energy Solutions

Stakeholders in the electricity sector are pushing for increased adoption of renewable energy solutions through effective consumer finance, investment support, and stakeholder collaboration.

Renewable Energy Conference Highlights the Future of Electricity Generation

Speaking during the 2023 renewable energy conference organised by the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) in collaboration with Heinrich Boll Foundation (HBF) in Abuja, Afam Victor Ogene, chairman, House of Representatives committee on renewable energy, emphasized that renewable energy was the future of electricity generation. He stated that with the fast dwindling global fossil fuel reserve, Nigeria must step up and be more intentional in investing in renewable energy and technologies.

According to Ogene, access to electricity has remained a big challenge in Nigeria, necessitating the need for alternative energy sources to augment the current supply. He emphasized the crucial role of energy in everyday lives and its impact on economic development, agriculture, and productivity across various sectors.

Ogene believes that Nigeria has diverse renewable energy resources that, if developed and funded, have the potential to bridge the energy gap in the country. As of 2022, Africa’s total renewable energy capacity was 59 gigawatts, representing a growth of nearly five percent compared to the previous year.

Renewable Energy Adoption Becomes Imperative

Ayo Ademilua, president of REAN, highlighted the increasing price of fossil fuels as a driving factor for the adoption of renewable energy in Nigeria. He emphasized that renewable energy is no longer just an alternative, but a necessity for individuals, businesses, and industries. Ademilua acknowledged the affordability challenge faced by consumers and the need for support and solutions to facilitate the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

Stakeholders’ Role in Pushing for Sustainable Energy Access

Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, managing director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), emphasized the rapid growth of Nigeria’s off-grid renewable energy space in the past five years. He stated that considering the number of Nigerians without access to sustainable energy, the sector requires more push from stakeholders.

Abba Aliyu, head of the project management unit at REA, representing the managing director, highlighted the impact of collaboration, innovation, and technical expertise in delivering energy to last-mile communities, healthcare centers, schools, markets, and agricultural clusters. The Rural Electrification Agency believes that sustainable energy access is key to true sustainable development and inclusion.
