A new blueprint for Connecticut prosecutors was unveiled on Thursday by Chief State’s Attorney Patrick Griffin. The blueprint, titled “Moving Justice Forward,” aims to promote fairness and increase public confidence in the state’s criminal justice system. It was developed over the course of nearly a year with private funding from the Herbert & Nell Singer Foundation. The report, which spans over 217 pages, provides transparency into prosecutors’ policies and goals.

Goals for a Fair and Transparent Criminal Justice System

The blueprint sets a series of goals that were developed by a diverse group of stakeholders including prosecutors, defense attorneys, victim’s rights advocates, judges, police, and individuals who have experienced the criminal justice system firsthand. The project analyzed prosecutorial policies in four judicial districts in Connecticut: Hartford, New Britain, New London, and Danbury. The goals outlined in the report aim to improve consistency between the state’s 13 judicial districts and cover various aspects of the criminal justice system, from charging decisions to sentencing recommendations.

Emphasis on Sustainable Development Goals

The blueprint aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a set of 17 global goals aimed at addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. By promoting fairness, increasing transparency, and recruiting a more diverse group of prosecutors, the blueprint contributes to several SDGs, including Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
