Switching to renewable energy way forward for Pakistan: minister

Introduction

Caretaker Minister for Energy Muhammad Ali emphasized the importance of switching to renewable energy in Pakistan during a seminar titled “Renewable Energy – the Way Forward.” The seminar was jointly organized by the Information Service Academy and Alliance for Good Governance Foundation. The minister highlighted the potential of solar and wind energy generation in Pakistan due to its abundant sunlight and wind resources. He also mentioned the government’s commitment to increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The transition to renewable energy aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. By investing in renewable energy sources, Pakistan can address its growing energy demands while mitigating the environmental impact of traditional energy sources. This transition also contributes to Goal 13: Climate Action, as it helps reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

Government Initiatives

The government has taken several initiatives to promote renewable energy in Pakistan. The establishment of the Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) and the implementation of supportive policies and incentives for renewable energy projects are driving the transition. These initiatives not only enhance energy security but also contribute to sustainable development.

National Electricity Plan 2023

The government recently approved the National Electricity Plan 2023, which provides guidelines, implementation mechanisms, and tools for realizing the goals of the National Electricity Policy in the power sector. The plan emphasizes de-carbonization and electrification as critical components of Pakistan’s energy strategy for the future.

Expanding Sustainable Energy

The minister discussed the possible plans to expand sustainable energy, with a particular focus on wind and solar energy. He emphasized the importance of gradually decreasing tariffs and utilizing indigenous resources. The aim is to achieve a stable power supply, reduce dependency on imported energy, and promote sustainable development.

Key Priorities for the Energy Sector

The minister outlined three key priorities for the energy sector:

  1. Addressing exploration challenges by improving data availability, removing payment barriers, and revising policies.
  2. Expanding the natural gas supply and focusing on the power sector, including transmission investments.
  3. Promoting renewables and resolving circular debt to ensure a stable power supply and payment resolution.
