University of Hawaiʻi President Joins APEC University Leaders’ Forum 2023
University of Hawaiʻi President David Lassner participated in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) University Leaders’ Forum (ALUF) 2023 on November 13 in San Francisco, California. The forum brought together university leaders to discuss and collaborate on sustaining and strengthening biodiversity in the face of climate change.
Investing in Tomorrow’s Biodiversity
The ALUF 2023, organized by the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) in partnership with the University of California, Davis and the University of California, Santa Cruz, focused on the theme of “Investing in Tomorrow’s Biodiversity.” The forum aimed to develop and disseminate innovative and sustainable solutions to address biodiversity loss.
High-Level Dialogue for Sustainable Solutions
ALUF 2023 was held alongside the annual APEC CEO Summit and brought together over 100 leaders, including CEOs, policy leaders, presidents, and top researchers from government agencies, universities, research centers, international NGOs, and civil society. The forum provided a platform for a high-level dialogue to collaborate on sustainable solutions for biodiversity loss.
Panels and Discussions
ALUF 2023 featured more than 30 speakers who participated in four panel discussions:
- Responding to Changing Biodiversity
- Mitigating Climate Change Impacts on Coastal Communities
- Optimizing Water Resources for a Sustainable Planet
- Creating a Sustainable Future through Food Systems Innovation
Among the speakers was UH Mānoa oceanography Associate Professor Rosie ʻAnolani Alegado.
Promoting Sustainable Endeavors
The diverse range of participants at ALUF 2023 facilitated in-depth conversations and discussions about sustainable endeavors that contribute to the economic development of the region. These endeavors include innovations in food science, water protection, and climate change mitigation.
