Team heads to Canada next week for international contest
Introduction
Enloe Magnet High School’s “Subchronic Exposure” team has once again emerged as the champions of the 2023 North Carolina Envirothon, a statewide academic environmental science competition. This victory marks their second consecutive win. The team, consisting of Felicia Yan, Veronica Cheaz, Disha Hosapattana, Jackson Steene, and Feehan Tuttell, along with their experienced advisor Chad Ogren, will now represent Wake County and North Carolina in the international competition held in Canada. They have the distinction of being the only high school in the state to advance to the international Envirothon six times.
Importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Envirothon competition aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. It aims to develop knowledgeable, skilled, and dedicated citizens who understand the importance of maintaining a balance between growth, quality of life, and natural resources. By participating in this competition, the students demonstrate Wake County’s commitment to environmental sustainability and showcase their understanding of the SDGs.
Previous Achievements
Last year, the Subchronic Exposure team secured 5th place at the international Envirothon competition, earning an impressive 586.67 points out of a total of 600 and a $2,000 college scholarship. This year’s contest will take place from July 23-29 at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. The team will be tested on their knowledge of forestry, wildlife, soils, land use, aquatic ecology, and current environmental issues. They have the opportunity to win thousands in scholarships and awards.
Expectations for the International Competition
The 2023 National Conservation Foundation Envirothon will bring together the top teams from all 50 U.S. states, Canada, and China. The Subchronic Exposure team will represent Wake County and compete against these teams. Their exceptional performance in defending their state championship title earlier this year in Burlington, NC has raised expectations for their performance in Canada. The team has dedicated their summer to intensive studying and preparation, and they are poised to make Wake County proud.
Sponsorship and Support
The team’s all-expenses-paid trip to Canada is sponsored by the NC Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts. The North Carolina Envirothon is coordinated through the NC Envirothon state committee, NC Division of Soil & Water Conservation, the state’s 96 local soil & water conservation districts, and the NC Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts.
Recognition for Other Teams
In addition to Enloe High School’s impressive performance, the Mean Green Beans team from Panther Creek High School in Cary secured 2nd place at the state competition. They received top score medallions and a $150 prize. This highlights the growing expertise and dedication of Envirothon teams across North Carolina.
Sponsorship Opportunities
Envirothon teams across North Carolina are sponsored by their local Soil and Water Conservation District. Wake County teams, including Enloe High School, are sponsored by the Wake Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.
