Salt Lake City Baskin Robbins Locations Fined for Violating Child Labor Laws

JODE LLC, operating as Baskin Robbins, has been fined $49,833 by the U.S. Department of Labor for violating federal child labor laws, according to an announcement made on Thursday.

Violation of Federal Child Labor Laws

The labor department stated that Baskin Robbins allowed 64 minors aged 14 to 15 years old to work too late in the day and for too many hours in a week while school was in session, which is a violation of federal law.

The eight Baskin Robbins locations that have been fined are:

  1. American Fork
  2. Bountiful
  3. Clearfield
  4. Layton
  5. Salt Lake City
  6. Sandy
  7. West Jordan
  8. West Valley City

The employer claimed that they followed less-restrictive state guidelines instead of federal requirements for employing minors based on erroneous legal guidance. This led to the penalties imposed by the department.

Importance of Compliance with Federal Labor Standards

“Employers must be aware of, and comply with, all federal labor standards, particularly when it comes to young workers,” stated Kevin Hunt, wage and hour district director in Salt Lake City.

During the investigation, several record-keeping violations were also discovered.

“Where a disparity exists between federal and state laws, employers must adhere to the most stringent standards. We encourage employers and employees to contact our office directly to get accurate information pertaining to federal labor laws and avoid an unfortunate situation like this one,” added Hunt.

This is not the first instance of child labor law violations in Utah. In January, three Cold Stone Creamery locations were fined $42,714 for similar violations.
