Introduction

Adult education opportunities in Ohio County are diverse and free of cost. These opportunities align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations to promote inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

English as a Second Language and High School Equivalency Classes

  • In-person English as a second language classes are available for speakers of other native languages.
  • High school equivalency learning classes are also offered.

Online Learning and Certifications

  • Adult education provides numerous online learning opportunities through independent study.
  • Preparation instruction is available for school service personnel positions, including the NOCTI exam.
  • Online study can lead to a computer essentials certificate and Microsoft Office certification.
  • Other programs include customer service, Intuit Quickbooks mastery, and IC3 Digital Literacy Certification.

In-person Classes and Support

  • In-person classes for high school equivalency education and English as a second language take place at West Virginia Northern Community College.
  • Morning class sessions are held from 8 a.m. until noon, Monday through Thursday.
  • Instructors Cindy West and Gail Adams provide additional support from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Flexible Learning and Student Success

  • Students in both in-person and online programs work at their own pace to achieve their learning goals.
  • Adult education programs have helped over 120 students per year, including those from neighboring communities.
  • COVID-19 has increased the demand for high school equivalency diplomas.
  • The Adult Learning Center offers flexibility and personalized learning experiences.

General Education Development (GED) Test

  • Starting in January, the Adult Education Learning Center in Ohio County will offer the GED test.
  • Educators believe the GED exam is more user-friendly for students.

Mathematics Challenges and Language Programs

  • Mathematics is often a challenging subject for students.
  • English as a second language classes are offered in beginner, intermediate, and advanced formats.
  • Students from various countries have attended the program, including Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Honduras, Italy, Ukraine, and Senegal.

Field Trips and Career Opportunities

  • Students in the in-person programs are taken on field trips to explore different programs at West Virginia Northern Community College.
  • About 40% of students achieving a high school diploma equivalency go on to pursue a four-year degree.
  • Others seek employment opportunities in trades and other fields.
