Swine Imports from Kosovo

Effective July 17, the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has added Kosovo to the list of countries affected by African swine fever. This decision has implications for the importation of processed pork products and byproducts from Kosovo as cargo. To ensure compliance with APHIS requirements, these imports must be accompanied by a Veterinary Services import permit and/or government certification confirming that the products were treated accordingly.

However, unprocessed pork products and byproducts imported from Kosovo as cargo will not be allowed to enter the U.S., except in cases where they are consigned to a USDA-approved establishment.

It is important to note that imports of live swine, swine germplasm, and unprocessed swine products and byproducts from Kosovo were already prohibited due to the presence of other swine diseases in the country.

Avocados from Peru

APHIS is currently considering a request to permit the importation of fresh avocado fruit from Peru into the U.S. for consumption. In this regard, APHIS has drafted a pest risk assessment that identifies potential pests that may remain on this commodity upon importation if no mitigation measures are applied. Stakeholders are invited to provide comments on this assessment, including any information that could lead APHIS to revise its assessment before determining pest mitigations and proceeding with the approval process for importing this commodity. The deadline for submitting comments is September 4.

Passionfruit from Vietnam

Similarly, APHIS is evaluating a request to allow the importation of fresh passionfruit fruit from Vietnam into the U.S. for consumption. A pest risk assessment has been drafted by APHIS, which outlines the potential pests that may be present on this commodity upon importation if no mitigation measures are implemented. Interested parties are encouraged to submit comments on this assessment, providing any information that might prompt APHIS to revise its assessment prior to identifying pest mitigations and advancing with the import approval process for this commodity. The deadline for submitting comments is September 9.

SDGs, Targets, and Indicators

  1. SDG 2: Zero Hunger

    • Target 2.4: By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding, and other disasters, and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
    • Indicator 2.4.1: Proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture.

The article mentions the importation of fresh avocado fruit from Peru and fresh passionfruit fruit from Vietnam into the U.S. for consumption. These imports contribute to the goal of achieving zero hunger by increasing the availability and diversity of food products in the U.S.

  2. SDG 15: Life on Land

    • Target 15.8: By 2020, introduce measures to prevent the introduction and significantly reduce the impact of invasive alien species on land and water ecosystems and control or eradicate the priority species.
    • Indicator 15.8.1: Proportion of countries adopting relevant national legislation and adequately resourcing the prevention or control of invasive alien species.

The article mentions that the Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is considering requests to allow the importation of fresh avocado fruit from Peru and fresh passionfruit fruit from Vietnam into the U.S. APHIS has drafted pest risk assessments to identify potential pests that may remain on these commodities upon importation if no mitigation is applied. This highlights the need to prevent the introduction and control invasive alien species to protect land and water ecosystems.
