Deforest Reed Jr. was born on July 27, 1948 in Omaha, Nebraska to Mildred Montgomery Reed and Deforest Reed Sr. He graduated from Omaha Tech High in 1966 and went on to earn a BS and MBA in Finance from UNO. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, a former member of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, and later joined the Sharon Seventh Day Adventist Church in Omaha. He also served as a Vietnam Era Veteran. He was preceded in death by his father Deforest Reed Sr. and his brother Raymond Reed.

He is also survived by a host of relatives and friends.
