Drought conditions increase and extend in SWFL NBC2 News
Drought Conditions in Southwest Florida
The newly updated U.S. Drought Monitor released this morning not only expands the abnormally dry conditions into Lee and Collier County but also increases areas along Lake Okeechobee into a Level 2 moderate drought.
Level 2 Increase near Lake Okeechobee
This moderate drought now includes communities such as Clewiston, Moore Haven, Sarasota Colony, and Buckhead Ridge.

Drought Conditions in Lee and Collier Counties
The new update brings the drought conditions to Level 1 in Lee and Collier Counties. This includes most of Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, and Immokalee.
Although some of these locations picked up 1-4 inches of rain yesterday, this was not taken into account. This data accounts for any rainfall through April 30.
The dry season, on average, runs from mid-October through mid-May. This season, we were treated with a series of cold fronts, bringing more rainy conditions to Southwest Florida during this past winter.
This was well needed after a fairly dry wet season last year left us in drought conditions through early January. This has also helped keep our drought conditions at bay through much of the second half of our dry season this year.
Fortunately, we are also getting an early preview of summer as we have been experiencing sea breeze showers and thunderstorms.
Over the next couple of weeks, the chances of rain will vary. Near the end of May and into June, the chances of rain typically increase daily.
As we are rounding out the last couple of weeks of the dry season, ending in mid-May, continue to use caution outdoors with any objects that can spark a wildfire.
SDGs, Targets, and Indicators
1. No Poverty
- Target 1.5: By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social, and environmental shocks and disasters.
- Indicator 1.5.1: Number of deaths, missing persons, and directly affected persons attributed to disasters per 100,000 population.
2. Zero Hunger
- Target 2.4: By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding, and other disasters, and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
- Indicator 2.4.1: Proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture.
6. Clean Water and Sanitation
- Target 6.4: By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.
- Indicator 6.4.1: Change in water-use efficiency over time.
13. Climate Action
- Target 13.1: Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.
- Indicator 13.1.1: Number of deaths, missing persons, and directly affected persons attributed to disasters per 100,000 population.
15. Life on Land
- Target 15.1: By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains, and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.
- Indicator 15.1.1: Forest area as a proportion of total land area.
