GALLUP Firefighter Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charges

A firefighter in Gallup, New Mexico, has been placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest last week. The city of Gallup made the announcement on Friday, April 5.

Charges and Investigation

  • Firefighter Andres Garcia is facing two sexual abuse charges related to children:
  1. Possession of child sexual abuse material
  2. Sexual exploitation of children under the age of 13

The charges were filed by the state Department of Justice as part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative, which aims to combat child sexual abuse. This program was launched by the federal Department of Justice in 2006.

Attorney General’s Statement

Attorney General Raúl Torrez emphasized the need for more action to protect children in New Mexico from sexual abuse. He stated, “Someone who was tasked with protecting our community chose to harm the most vulnerable among us. This should serve as a stark reminder of how easily children can become victims of very dangerous situations by the adults around them.”

Torrez urged individuals who witness suspicious behavior involving adults and children to speak up and report it to law enforcement, rather than remaining silent.
