Man Sentenced to Prison for Assaulting Woman, Emphasizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A man convicted earlier this month of assaulting a woman twice was sentenced Tuesday to 15 and a half years to 19 and a half years in prison.

Background

Sammy Anderson, 29, received the sentence from Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony Donofrio after he was convicted April 4 on two counts of felonious assault, a second-degree felony; and being a felon in possession of a firearm, a third-degree felony.

Anderson has been in the Mahoning County Jail as he awaited his trial.

Incidents and Prosecution

Anderson was on trial for two separate incidents: one on June 16 and one on Sept. 14 involving the same woman. In the first incident, he is accused of beating the woman and taking her car on McBride Street. In the second incident, he is accused of pistol-whipping the same woman as they were driving in a car somewhere on the East Side.

Assistant Prosecutor Caitlyn Andrews said Anderson broke three bones in the victim’s face in the first incident and pistol-whipped her in the second incident.

Anderson has a history with the victim and has kept her from pressing charges before and he bragged about it to police, Andrews said.

Victim Intimidation

Andrews said Anderson called the victim in the case over 1,400 times since October and prosecutors had to get a material witness warrant for her to testify, although she ultimately came in and testified.

“He did everything he could possibly do to get her to not come to court,” Andrews said.

Sentencing and SDGs

Andrews asked for a sentence of 20 to 24 and a half years in prison, saying Anderson needed to be in prison to protect the victim and the public.

“This is an extremely violent man who has shown what he is capable of,” Andrews said.

Anderson’s mother and grandmother asked the judge for leniency, saying that he has issues with post-traumatic stress disorder and he has not been the same since his brother was murdered. They both said they do not condone his actions and that he does deserve some form of punishment.

Anderson apologized to the court, but the judge said he needed to apologize to the victim.

Judge Donofrio said after sitting through the trial, “I don’t think I’ve seen a worst case of abuse.”

The judge said he did not understand how the victim could stay with Anderson or why his family members didn’t get him help after they knew he needed help. The judge also said a video of the pistol-whipping that Anderson made was “disgusting,” and his mocking the victim in the video makes him “less than human.”

“He acts like the law doesn’t apply to him,” the judge said.

The judge also said he was upset that Anderson’s mother called the victim on her son’s behalf to keep her from testifying. He said he wasn’t sure what the prosecutor’s office would do about that, but he called her actions “prosecutable.”

Prior Convictions

Anderson is also on probation after being sentenced on April 22, 2022, to a year in prison in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in two separate cases where he pleaded guilty to carrying concealed weapons and being a felon in possession of a firearm. It was his third conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

In October 2021, Anderson was accused of biting part of the victim’s ear off and was charged with felonious assault. Court records show the charge was reduced in municipal court to a first-degree misdemeanor charge of assault. Anderson pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation, court records show.
